Near disastrous stop
Has your car ever stopped on the highway? That just happened to me. While driving to Suwon on the highway, the electrical systems seemed to start failing, with the instrument lights starting to dim and instruments such as the speedometer pointing to zero. The engine kept running fine for a while, so I was hoping that I could at least reach the next exit at Suwon before stopping and checking things out. Alas, the engine started to putter out just a couple of kilometers from the Suwon exit, so I parked the car on the side of the highway.
Waiting on the side of the highway while other cars are passing by at 100km/h or more is rather scary. Fortunately, it took less than half an hour for the tow truck to arrive. At the nearest car shop the car was towed to, it turned out that the generator broke down. This meant the engine wasn’t generating electricity, which means not enough juice for the electrical systems and eventually not enough voltage for igniting the fuel in the engine. After about an hour in the car shop, the generator was replaced and the car was back into working shape.
It was not a fun experience waiting in a car in the cold with other cars continuously whizzing by at speeds fast enough that the winds buffeted the car, but at least it didn’t last too long.
